Exaltations by Richard Garfinkle

What's the genre? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.

  1. I get an Inspirational Fiction vibe. The main guy is looking out into space so I'd say this is some kind of inner journey or quest.

I'd pick this up and look inside just to figure out what this eclectic cast of characters could possibly have in common.

I like this cover. The only thing I find a little odd is that it seems the Greek goddess is giving him a golf ball. Is that what it's supposed to be?

Also, the fact that she only has one arm gives her the Venus the Milo look, however, it looks awkward. It's a minor thing but, I'd rethink her posture.

  2. The colors and textures are pleasing, and the typography is easy to read. I'm not sure what the little circles the people are standing on signify. All I can guess about the genre is that it might be general fiction with a multicultural aspect (or maybe, like Gisele said, the pointing up at the sky signifies an inspirational story). Because the art is so nice, I'd pick up the book and see what it's about.

  3. It looks like a world travel, soul searching, life changing story.

A good cover, with good text. Some more text giving some more information might be a good idea, such as "A Novel" if it is one.

  4. It's gorgeous. I think it's some sort of inner journey type of story, where the protagonist actually travels around the world to find himself, sort of like "Eat Pray Love."

  5. Interesting comments. Thanks, everyone.

"Exaltations" is an interstitial fantasy allegory (yep, a novel), with a main character who is a biographer moving through alternate worlds and histories who finds that humanity's minds are being manipulated and channeled by living stories. The other people on the cover are his allies from various worlds.

The woman on the right is supposed to look partially-bound (it's why her other arm is pulled back). The mosaics and the circles and the falling white discs are all plot elements.

In many respects "Exaltations" *is* a world travel, soul searching, life changing story. I find it interesting that it comes across as inspirational.
