Darklands by Donna Burgess

What's the genre? What's the logline? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss. The cover artist is Kim Killion a.k.a Hot Damn Designs. http://www.hotdamndesigns.com/home.asp

  1. It's a little hard to read the subtitle, and I'm not a fan of the generic 3D image of the woman. The background is really nice, though. The font is readable, but it's a little harder to read the author's name.

  2. I like the colors and pictures and the background. In my opinion though, it's a little busy...with text. You have a brief blub, the title, a line under it, a sub title, author name and what I assume is the "series" name. I think you take out the series name or the subtitle. Maybe a spec of blood or bite marks on her neck to get the vampire theme.

  3. I like it, although I agree it's text-busy.

The title is "Darklands" and the subtitle is "A Vampire's Tale." Then later you have "Darklands Vampires" which becomes redundent. Also, the blurb is completely illegible.

  4. I agree with what the others have said. The cover is too busy and much of the text is redundant.

I would suggest lose both the blurb and the Darkland's block at the bottom.

You might also want to move your title from the middle to the top up over the moon. (not 100% sure on that, but see how it looks).

    genre: urban fantasy.

  5. You need to move the title to the top. I mean, what's the point of having a sexy woman on the cover if text is covering her sexy bits? Let's face it, no one's going to buy the book because there's a moon on the cover, or powerlines -- they'll buy it because there's a sexy girl with a bare midriff and tight pants in a scary setting.

  6. Thanks for the comments, everyone! If anyone has seen the first cover for this novel (homemade), this one is definitely a step up ;-D.

Kim did a terrific job and overall, I'm satisfied. She primarily does romance covers, so I believe this was one of her first horror covers.

I do think some of the text is a tough translation to a thumbnail view. For example, the bottom strip is supposed to indicate this is book one of the Darklands Vampire series.
I also would love to be able to brighten the cover up a bit. Depending on the website, the images are difficult to make out.

As a newbie in e-publishing, I've quickly learned the thumbnail is the main selling point. A cover may look awesome full-sized, but in a Kindle world, that doesn't matter so much.

S.J.--I love this site. What a great idea! I visit often, but seldom have the time to comment. Thanks for having my cover on today.

  8. Looks like DAZ 3D... It's not bad. It's not great, but it's not bad. Good color choices...
