Devil's Harvest by Margery Scott

What's the genre? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.

  1. I'm having a bit of trouble pinning down genre here. The male and female faces in closeup make me think romance. The scalpel and title name make me think medical thriller.

I'm not sure I like her looking off to the left side while she's in the right corner, while his face is so much larger and looking straight ahead. If it's a medical thriller, I'd lose his face all together and put something else down there.

And with the typeface; I'd take off the emboss. It's not in style right now. If it's a romance, I'd say the typeface is okay but a bit thin; the red is kind of overwhelming the type. If it's a thriller, I'd go with something much bolder and in a sans-serif.

  2. Definitely RS with a medical element. The title and author name are clear and easy to read. The colors are bold. I think it's a great cover and one that stands out.

  3. I rather like this cover but it isn't as clear as it might be on the genre. I would guess Romantic Suspence, but I did have to think about it for a while. It didn't jump out at me which I kind of prefer since I'm not sure how long potential readers are willing to spend figuring out genre.
But it is an attractive cover imo. If I were in the market for that genre, I'd give this a look.

  4. Not sure of the genre but it's a clean, straightforward look as far as the design goes. Nothing fancy or artistic, just cropped faces. A very safe approach.

  5. It has to be a RS. Their eyes definitely hold secrets. I love the way she's looking away. It's almost as if she'll give too much away if we could see her straight on. Everything is well placed and the bold colors caught my attention. As did the title. Love it!

  6. I would guess medical thriller based on the name and the scalpel.
Considering that so many of us are having problem figuring out the genre then there is a problem with the cover.

If it is a thriller, maybe a drop or two of blood of the scalpel would help.

  7. Images look 'stock' (which of course, they are, but should they look that way?) They don't fit the title - one or the other has gotta go. Is the devil a doctor? An HMO? Does he have blue or green eyes?

It IS a clean design of course, but that does not help a buyer trying to reach a decision. I'd have taken out all the color and one or the other of those sets of eyes. One set of eyes on a red background. Scalpel's fine - people react fearfully to them. Maybe along the lines that Eric suggested an indication that the red is actually blood, or flames, or both. Anything to tie the image into the book title.
