Concerto by Sandra Miller
What's the genre? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.
Unfortunately, I don't read literary fiction, but this cover is really beautiful. About a violinist, obviously. Not sure what the logline would be, though.
I'd probably sample because of the cover (yes, I can be a sucker for such things, lol!).
The cover is lovely. There is a good chance I'd take a look at it. It could be literary. I'd consider giving a bigger hint to the genre if it's not, but it is such a nice cover, I'd hate to play around with it, too.
I'd say literary fiction as the genre. Very artsy, very pretty. I agree with JR, I'd put something on there to indicate the genre. But I'd definitely pick this up to see what it's about.
You have all hit my dilemma right on the mark! I love, love, love this cover and always have.
But Concerto is romantic suspense or suspense (I've heard differing opinions on the genre). And it has a cover that screams literary fiction.
I'm working on some other options, because I imagine this cover, as pretty as it is, has got to be putting off prospective readers because you can't tell what it is!
(Eric-) I would not have guessed that this suspense based on the cover.
As the others before me, that blood stains would help along with some more text to say a suspense novel. You might also what to run the cover though Photoshop and try to shift the colors, just a touch to make the color tone more blue.
As has been said, blood would work nicely, I think. I think you might could do a bloody fingerprint under the text in the lower left-hand corner. I would have never guessed suspense and I would be willing to bet you're losing readers who read suspense.
Literary fiction.

Thanks for the comments everyone!
A drop of blood on the fiddle might do the trick.
ReplyDeleteI thought about that, too, SJ. Or maybe a bloody fingerprint under the author's name...

ReplyDeleteWow - romantic suspense? I agree with others to not change it that much, maybe include a bloody fingerprint like J. R. suggests.
