Let's Try Something New!

In addition to the critiques, let's try creating a logline from nothing but the image and text on the cover.

Everyone knows what a logline is, right? It's a summary of a book in one or two sentences. For example, a logline for Silence of the Lambs might be: An FBI trainee uses information from one serial killer to track another.

Let's start with today's cover. Perhaps the author can chime in at some point and give us the real logline.

Have fun!

What's the genre? What's the logline? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.

  1. In seven separate episodes, a New York detective tracks a modern day Jack the Ripper.

    Just to give an example.

  2. I'm getting seriously mixed signals from this one.

First look: Erotica. The pulpy feel from the figure with the apple red butt, the blocky retro font, say "sex" to me.

Second look: "Seven Deadly Stories from The City of Sin" ... huh? It's still pulpy but now it's .. what? Murder mysteries with a lot of semi naked women? And .. City of Sin? Where's that? The Rotten Apple connection to Big Apple sort of implies New York City, but I've never heard NYC called City of Sin. Las Vegas is "Sin City" but that's not what's on the cover.

I wouldn't buy this one because I tend not to buy anthologies, and crime/sex isn't in my genre preference.

  3. I have no idea what the logline would be. Like Nathan, I'm getting mixed signals. I can't tell whether this is erotica or a murder mystery anthology or what.

  4. Pulp is what it's parodying.

The log line is actually on the cover, but another one could be:

"The hard-boiled detective, the down-to-earth stripper, the embittered hack, the psycho killer, the sultry brief, the gentleman thief - they all live in the Rotten Apple."

  5. I'm just confused. A few others stated some of what I'm feeling New York or Las Vegas? It's a little cheeky to me (no pun intended- ok so it was intended, I couldnt help it), with the apple/butt. I like the description though. I would buy on description you gave but not with the cover. sorry.

  6. The image caught my eye and I assumed the title referred to the girl, not NYC. The blurb made me think of Vegas. So I completely missed the tie in to the Big Apple.

What I get from the cover is murder mysteries involving sex crimes. I doubt that's your intention.

  7. What Nathan said. My first thought was, erotica. My next thought was, since when has NYC been called the City of Sin? No, to me that's Las Vegas.

Nice big apple butt, though. ;-)
