An Exercise in Futility by Steve Thomas
What's the genre? What's the logline? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.
I think that this cover proves the point that a good piece of artwork doesn’t necessarily make a good cover. I’m sure that Roy B. Cokenour is a very good artist, but I don’t think that this cover is going to help sales.
In thumbnail view, I can’t tell what the heck is going on in the artwork. I’m going to guess that this is a fantasy novel only based on the odd ball weapon the character is holding.
Looks like it is trying to be horror, but the art is actually rather bad. I suppose the chain is supposed to be on chain, but yet it looks like one kind of link near the 'handle' and another around (and through?) the body? The decoration at the top of the page makes the "An" in the title look like it is in parentheses--which is very confusing. The curved text seems out of place. I would skip over this book in a heartbeat since it looks so amatuerish.
Credit where it's due: This cover was designed by Roy B. Cokenour. You can find him on deviantart here: http://kaber13.deviantart.com/

Humor. I think the thing the guy is holding onto is what's left of an exercise bike (An Exercise in Futility); looks like a bike chain.
ReplyDeleteDo I get a gold star? ;-)
Forgot to add - not sure if I'd buy the book based on the cover alone, but I might sample it.
