Upgrade by Stephen Hise

What's the genre? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.

  1. Hmm. I'm getting techno-thriller, perhaps something to do with computer dating...

The lipstick makes me think there's a femme fatale element. Strong female protagonist/antagonist?

  2. Yes, techno thriller, or sci-fi but with romance?

The lips make it look romance, the rest of the cover make it look sci-fi/techno. The blurb hints romance again. So I'm a bit ambivalent about genre.

However, I like the overall design (except the lips, they do nothing for me). I like the typefaces, the man's face with the grid, and the placement of the elements.

  3. I do like the cover, but the lipstick does also throw me for a loop. I would have guessed techno-thriller for the genre, but maybe we are talking fembot instead.

  4. The red lipstick thing is... bizarre. I'd like this cover if it weren't for that. At a guess I'd say those "women are the evil" books in the techno thriller class. The lipstick thing is a huge turn off for me but I'd guess that may be a positive in me quite definitely not being the target audience.

  5. Confusing. I'd say it's something like Fatal Attraction, maybe. A nasty female antagonist. I agree with JR about the lipstick, but it's probably an important clue about the book's contents. Without it, the cover would be very bland. Not my sort of book, I think.
