Mental Shrillness by Todd Russell

What's the genre? What's the logline? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.

This cover gives me a very “call of cthulhu” feeling, due to the critter on the cover. I would guess that it’s a horror / monster story.

I think that it’s interesting that Todd gave the cover a bright yellow/orange color which is normally considered happy colors.

Overall good cover, bright, attention getting. The type face is large and easy to read.

  2. I didn't quite recognize the thing on the cover as a monster. It struck me as more of a splat but on second glance I see that it's supposed to be a monster, but not a very well rendered one, a bit cartoonish. That puts me off.

In fact, this sort of loud and rather cartoonish seeming cover would probably put me off enough that I wouldn't consider the novel. Maybe it's a humorous monster novel? That might fit and if the blurb were good, I might would buy it but I don't think the cover would make me read the blurb... so for me there's a problem.

  3. Looks like a humor book, maybe a spoof. I'm afraid there's nothing appealing about it -- it looks like the designer went with his/her first idea and just slapped it together. The graduated tones don't mean anything to me, and the 3 different fonts just look messy and unorganized. Sorry. Not my cup of tea.
