Black Dorn by Daryl Devore

What's the genre? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.

  1. I am not a fan of this cover.

The white text at the top it totally unreadable,in fact I missed it on the first few glances. None of the type faces really work you seldom want more than two typefaces and here you have 3. The Blue edges on the bottom don't work at all.

I don't think that either image is very strong and breaking them up doesn't help them. If you must use them, I would suggest flipping them, so that the women is at the bottom, it might give the impression that she is in that castle.

  2. I can't read any of the typeface. If not printed above, I wouldn't know the name of the book or author. Even with glasses on. I have no idea what the top line says. I can't figure out the genre or what the woman at the top is doing.

Sorry, but nothing on this cover works for me.

  3. Oh. There's text at the top. I wouldn't have known if Eric and Susan hadn't mentioned it.

The typeface pairings just don't work. Author name is readable, but the Franklin-Gothic married to an overly heavy and clunky serif don't work at all.

I do not at all like the woman's submissive pose, nor do I like a photo of a floor appearing above a photo that shows sky.

I don't know genre either. Unfortunately not much about this cover works for me.

  4. Submissive woman and a castle says historical romance to me. I love the black & gold color scheme, and the juxtaposition of the tiled floor with the font with the author's name looks classy. The line of type at the top would read better in black, I think. And I'd have preferred the title in the same font as the author's name. Would I buy it based on the cover. Yes. (Already have in fact.)

  5. Right off I get the feeling this is a historical romance because of the castle.
I really like the black band across the front with the author's name--that caught my eye right away.
The woman bowing down makes me think she is in trouble somehow--and I would like to see what that trouble is.
All in all, I like this cover.
One other reason I like this cover is because it is different. I'm tried of the same old, same old covers.

  8. While I couldn't read the small print at the top either, I did like the two other types of fonts as they appear. That, paired with the Gothic type pictures gave me a sense of historical right off. Her submissive posturing let me know she's in trouble. Would I be interested in this book based on the cover? Yes.
