Initiate by Tara Maya

What's the genre? What is it you like or don't like about this cover? Does it make you want to know more about the book? Does it make you want to BUY the book? Discuss.

  1. fantasy .. possibly YA .. the lil blue fairy is kind of a give away. There's probably a subgenre I'm not thinking of right now.

I'm guessing this is a bugbear to make out in thumbnail, but the artwork seems very well done and it's plenty legible in the "kindle page" size.

I wouldn't buy it, but I'm guessing middle aged, male, science fiction fanatics aren't in this author's demographic. :D

  2. If anyone is interested, the cover for the second volume is here:

And if you want to compare the US and UK covers, you can see the UK covers for the first two book here:

  3. Tara,it looks like you did the things on 2nd book that I was going to recommend for the 1st - make the title and your name bigger. Otherwise, I think they are interesting and a good match for your genre. But I actually like your UK covers better.

  4. I too prefer the UK covers, but there's no mistaking the genre in the US ones. Just not a big fan of models on covers. I think characters should look the way the reader imagine them.

  5. I'm going to be odd man out and say that I like the cover with the girl and fairy better than the U.K. version. It says fantasy to me rather than just some color lines.

I would also agree to make the text a bit bigger.

  6. Your cover's remind me of Anne McCaffrey's Acorna books! They are really beautiful and fantastical!

  7. Beautiful! Though why is it that I always seem to like the UK covers better as well. I think, as S.J. said, it comes down to actually imagining the characters yourself, rather than as the artist illustrated them. Either way, though, these covers are lovely and leave no question of genre.

  8. The layout in itself is quite good, but a few things bother me about it, first being how the girl looks like she's stoned out of her mind (What is she staring at?! What is she reaching for?!) and second being that ugly blue fairy thing.

    I prefer the UK versions.
